Wow....all chumpies except maybe Kearse. I have no clue wether he can still play at all, I just know that he terrorized us for long enough and I'm glad to see him go. Well, ya know, we could sign him for the....nevermind. It's not even worth saying at this point.

I wouldn't mind Leftwich as a long term backup. Plus he is from DC, and that might rejuvenate his career.

agreed! i, for one, am highly skeptical of todd collins' value as our primary backup now that we are no longer using al saunders' system.

i think leftwich would be great in that role. especially now that he's been cut by 2 teams, i imagine his contract negotiating leverage is about nil.

Re: The Scrap Heap

justin hartwig was just cut by the panthers

back-up center is one of our most pressing needs, IMO. i'd like us to address that need in the draft but i think we'd do well to add a veteran, like hartwig, as well.

Does anyone know what's going on with Leftwich?? Is he that bad that he can't even get a back-up job?????

He's had an ankle & knee problem that I don't think he's ever recovered from. Don't know if that's what's keeping teams away, but his long wind up motion combined w/his unhealthy legs makes his delivery extra slow.

Essentially, he telegraphs his passes and they turn into "ninners."

ninners = slang for interceptions

see also "into", "pick", "hot one", & "brick"

Teams misevaluate QBs all the time. Leftwich will sign on somewhere, but no team has an opening at starting QB, so barring something happening to the starter of whatever team he signs on for, he's probably not going to get another chance.

Early career injuries can derail a promising career, even for a player who continues to learn the tricks of the trade from the sidelines. Players who are injury prone don't get financial committments, and any QB without a financial committment will take the blame whenever anything goes wrong. He's an easy scapegoat.

This is what I mean. Why isn't Atl on the phone with Culpepper. They're going with Chris Redmen and Joey Harrington?? Again?? Sorry but they deserve to lose. I'm sure they're going to draft someone but still. Chris Redmon wasn't even on a roster for a year or two. And when he was he was busy getting yelled at by Brian Billick. WTF are some of these teams thinking? And Chi. has got to have the dumbest FO in the NFL. They let go of both starting wr's and bring back both Grossman and Orton? LOL! I'm not sure what KC likes so much about Croyle. He never showed anything in college. And Huard and is 100 years old. What is Balt doing?? When are they going to realize that McNair is old and broken down. Unless they're going with Boller or Smith.

I would love to be an NFL GM. Give me 3 years. I'll work for 500k and I'll fix your team. Then I need a raise once I've proven myself! :-)

That's just it, they don't want to pay anyone much at this point because they are all probably considering their options in the 1st round, which for a few of those teams will mean major $.

On a side note, isn't it nice not having to discuss the skins qb situation?

It's very nice to know we've got a potential stud. But JC and the offense is going to have to learn yet another system. There is going to be an adjustment period. But JC is a hard worker so I'm sure he's already in there learning the playbook.

Or everyone's favorite former D-II QB, Cullen Finnerty.

Culpepper can absolutely still make all the mental reads a QB in this league needs to make to be successful (probably as well as he ever could), but he can no longer physically drop from under center. Culpepper needs to be in an exclusive shotgun offense to be able to achieve optimal results, and that offense doesn't exist. Still, the price tag he would carry combined with the potential output should make some bad teams serious start considering trying to bring an exclusive shotgun offense to level the playing field a bit.

Chicago certainly hasn't gotten worse through their moves though. If anything, they've freed up roster space needed to vastly improve their passing game. Of course, that only means so much until they actually acquire the players to make their passing game better--through the draft or otherwise. Cutting the dead weight is the first step to achieving success. Unfortunately for the Bears, it isn't the last step.

Atlanta doesn't need a QB who is going to win games right now, they just need someone who can give good interviews in the press, is clean cut, and can represent them while they rebuild. They are completely void of all talent right now, except at the running back position. They've got a lot of work to do, and it makes sense for them to start on the defensive side.

But yes, for the record, Leftwich is a lot better than either Redman or Harrington. Having him in there to start 4 games and play well, but then to get injured and start a QB carousel is exactly what they need to avoid while rebuilding. Winning two extra games is pretty counter productive for their needs if those two games make them a 6-10 team.

From what I've read, the real knock on Leftwich is his conditioning, and that the injuries have been the result of being out of shape, putting extra stress on other parts of the body.
