Using that kind of logic is like saying, because I didn't blow my hand off with a grenade this time, I probably won't blow my hand off playing with it next time.

I would assume sailing is a combination of skill and luck and you have to have both to be successful. Her brother had both, she on the other hand seemed to only have one and also had a severe case of stubbornness, seeing as they didn't want to wait until after the bad storm season settled and she could've sailed on calmer waters.

Not defending just saying I suspect that this family, apparently big into sailing, has already let one child sail around the world so felt more comfortable letting another

It's a failure on the parents' part to help the kid maintain a sense of balance in their life.

Pursuit of excellence is great, but it should never come before the days she could have lived from this day forth. At some point, you need to realize that as great as you are at sailing, it's just a hobby.

Seems like it should be obvious. But the parents obviously failed to keep things in perspective.

Well looks like she's just fine. Long live happy endings.

Abby Sunderland is alive and apparently safe aboard her damaged sailboat

Re: Abby Sunderland Feared Lost AT Sea

I also love the people commenting on the link I posted. Talking about how wonderful and brave she is and should be commended for her efforts.

Okay yeah, I agree, the chick is brave and deserves praise for living out her dreams and am definitely glad she's safe. But come the hell on. She wanted to sail around the world at 16! I betcha if she would've died everyone would be talking about what a headstrong child she was and that her parents were idiots and should've channeled her desires into a safer activity.

Everyone has their dreams and desires but I think age needs to be taken into account or at least some sort of waiver needs to be signed by her and her parents stating that she knows she's potentially risking her life.

I don't know. It all seems a bit sideshow to me.

Good news. But I'm with you, DRave.

#1, being the youngest to sail around the world, is that really even fame? Does anybody care? You get a stop on Leno and Letterman, after that nobody remembers you did that. It's not like she just won 8 gold medals in one Olympics.

#2, risking your life for the pursuit of greatness is retarded. Risk your life to save your country and protect its freedoms? THAT is to be honored. Risking your life to set a record? That's just foolhardy.

I agree with this in regards to the 16 year old her parents should have held her back and her brother.

Now for some older thriller seekers they are not living unless they are doing something like this, so for them I say might as well go out doing something you love then sitting around hating your life.

She had a problem (boat issue) very early in her trip which required out side help so she could no longer become the youngest girl to solo around the world. She just decided to continue with the trip. At that point the parents should have said hey lets wait for a better time to sail around the world.

I guess with a non stop trip around the world you have to have some luck when it comes to weather but just sailing from place to place does not really involve luck. With todays communications a person has 24/7 weather info and anything else they need to make educated decisions about when and where they sail.

With that said she knew she was heading into this bad weather and made the decision to try and sail through the storm. She could have changed course and sail around or away from the weather front.

Only rich people can be this stupid.

she seems like a rich spoiled brat who gets her way.

im surprised FD isnt mad at the hundred of thousands of dollars spent by nearby countries for helicopters, boats and experts to check up on her.

when she gets her book deal, and reality tv show i hope those countries get reimbursed.

rich people. on the east coast they are stuck up. on the left coast they expect everyone to part the seas for them.

Even then, I don't get it. Falls into the category of riding motorcycles, it just makes no sense. Find something else fun to do that doesn't involve risking your life.

It would not bother me at all if they sent her a bill.

So if anyone gets lost at sea should they be billed for the search?
