Remember when they traded for a pick in order to have the necessary pick sign a restrictive free agent (I think it was Chad Morton).

While I thought VC actually did okay in ID'ing talent - flame away, but it's my opinion and discussed ad nauseum in older threads - he almost always overvalued it. Thus, even the one decent skill he had was compromised.

Getting a pro-bowl quality Tackle (left or right) for a 3rd or 4th round pick is good solid pick-up. Remember, we were all thinking this would take a 2nd rounder to go through. Honestly, and IMO, if we can get a 3rd for AH at this point, it is just a huge win for us.
I hear what you're saying. You'll not get any lip from me about getting lineman. McNabb can't do squat doing the Brunnell / Campbell shuffle.

There's no differentiation. It's just tackles on the ballot.

The top left tackles always go to Hawaii.

Only LT's get voted to the Pro Bowl and one of them gets moved to the right side. See Chris Samuels it happend to him a couple of times.

I love how Jammal Brown says basically "I feel like I'm a LT and can play LT, but they want me to play RT so I'm willing to do what they want me to do"

Reminds me of the time Albert Haynesworth said "I feel like I'm a 4-3 DT and can play 4-3 DT, but they want me to play multiple positions along the line so I'm...." Nevermind

Just from what I've seen in how Shanahan appears to handle players (say the right thing, seemingly require the right things), I think it will become a non-issue. Under the past regime, a player like this would have been aquired at a higher cost and then allowed to "have his way". I get the feeling Shanny is very much a "put up or get the hell out" kind of guy.

Again, to me, it is the culture change that seems the most obvious. Yes, I know Shanny has his limitations. Yes, I know he has an ego the size of Alaska. Yes, he D's have not been anything to write home about and he is making a fundamental change in the way the Skins play defense. But, love or hate the switch to a hybrid 3-4, it just seems that there is a plan in place. (Let's sign 3 or 4 guys to play NT in case AH becomes a problem, lets see if we can get some quality talent at without crippling our cap or our ability to start stocking through the draft).

All this while Allen is rebuilding ties with the players who remember what winning is all about.

To me, this move is just the latest in a plan. Finally, there is method rather than just madness.

We may not win 10 games this year (although we might if T. Williams pans out and the interior lineman are able to play with consistency - i.e. same guys week in and week out), but, for the first time in three or four years, I am feeling good about our O-line.
My only concern with Brown is he didn't play in 2009 because of an injury. But Dr. Andrews says he's ok and he passed his physical, so I guess he's good to go.

I'm not worried about conditioning issues or work ethic/locker room stuff. He's 29 and looking for one more big pay-day. He's got all the incentive in the world to work his tail off. If I had to guess, I'd say he'll have a pro-bowl caliber year protecting McNabb's strong side.

We have dominated the offseason once again. Why does it feel so different?

Although I have the nagging fear, the biggest differences in my mind are:

1) this FO isn't shouting out moves ahead of time or in a panic, and thus paying premium prices for unsure gain

2) they have clearly addressed nearly every obvious need with multiple players to avoid dependence on a star and to foster competition

3) the players quotes are contained optimism, not blind allegiance (for the most part, but this is like fan voting in the probowl not worth a lot but very visible)

4) Its the Skins and dammit they gotta win sometime!

Agree 100%, but #4 is the best.

And every year we've done this, everyone says "It's different this time."

- Albert Haynesworth (2009) - nuff said. most ppl loved this.
- Jason Taylor (2008) - last minute decision, most accepted this. he sucked.
- Brandon Lloyd/Archuleta (2006) - Gibbs did it, most accepted it. they sucked.
- Bruce Smith, Deion, Trotter, etc, etc, etc

I'm a Redskins homer, so (again) I'll say that this is "different" and I'm hopeful (perhaps we're giving up lower draft picks for good "value"). But I think we all need to realize, this is the very similar to what we've been doing for years. If the moves work, then Shanahan's a genius. If not, we'll look back and shake our heads.

When It Comes to Free Agency, Redskins Usually Aggressive
The past free agents we have signed has never really bothered me it what we gave up and gave them that was always my issue. Brandon Lloyd is the perfect example. He had one year left on his deal and we could have waited and signed him for about the same deal even if he had a good season. Bruce Smith while on the down side provided some play but his deal was too big for what he had left in the tank. These also don't look like such a bust if you don't give up the bus with each deal.

Re: Report: Redskins Have Traded for Jammal Brown

What's funny about this move is that I doubt Vinny would have been savvy enough to sign Brown without nearly giving away the farm.

This deal is good for us in that if the Redskins, and specifically Donovan McNabb performs well (I think it's combo of basically a Pro-Bowl year by McNabb and the Skins go something like 9-7), then the Saints and Eagles swap picks and are compensated accordingly.

Re: Report: Redskins Have Traded for Jammal Brown

We've been making some big moves this offseason but it just feels different b/c after so many years of Vinny bringing in vastly overrated talent for way too much (picks + money), we've made some really quality moves w/o coming close to betting the farm.

I mean Allen and Shanahan brought in a top 15 OT for a 3rd/4th round pick. That's got to look good compared to Vinny who was thinking of giving up 2 1st round picks for Ochocinco.

As someone pointed out, I wouldn't be the least surprised if Brown turned in a Pro-Bowl year. Not saying he will, but if healthy he's certainly capable.
