Re: The Correct Singing Of The National Anthem
Did you know the actual national anthem was made by taking the melody from a popular drinking song "To Anacreon in Heaven", and pairing it with the lyrics of Francis Scott Key?
I never knew that either until today. I thought it was an original composition. It's still patriotic obviously, but this blew my mind. http://www.astrococktail.com /anacreon.html Listen for yourself, it's crazy. It goes literally note for note.

The WAY she sang the Anthem was disrespectful, just as much as not knowing the words. It's meant to be sung the way it was written, not mutilated into a pop song to bring attention on yourself. It's a reverent song, not meant for entertainment. Sing it properly and if you have to sing it publicly, MEMORIZE THE WORDS. She has been singing it since she was a kid in the Mickey Mouse Club and it a professional singer (even though she's a horrible one). There are no excuses for her botching the words.

So what should we do with her? Kill her, kick her out of the country, etc...? What would be good. We are humans and we make mistakes, honestly IMO this is a little one, just move on. You know surgeons and doctors make mistakes as well that end up killing folks. I would worry more about those mistakes then CA's singing error.

Re: The Correct Singing Of The National Anthem
I don't think people are as concerned about her mistakes as much as the way she sung the song in general. Water under the bridge now, certainly. She's still an amazing singer, but I wouldn't doubt the NFL maybe doing a canned version the next go around.

I got no problem with new renditions of the National Anthem. I loved the way Jim Cornelison did it at the NFC Championship game (even though it sounded slightly Canadian). I hated the way Agularia did it, but ive learned awhile ago the superbowl isnt for big pro-football fan, its for mass appeal including foreigners, emos and girls who dont even really know whats going on so they can have water cooler conversations about the commercials, pop National Anthem mixes, pop music half time shows and all the other bullshit most regular football fans hate. I do got a little problem with her messing up the words, but everyone makes mistakes and even the President of America is bound to leave out words when quoting the Declaration of Independence, even with his teleprompter. Its just human nature that we make mistakes, its carrying on and acting like you didn’t mess up that separates “good” artists or politicians from the rest of us. |

Re: The Correct Singing Of The National Anthem
Don't sing the national anthem at sporting events...problem solved. BTW, why do they sing the national anthem at these big gatherings?

Even in rehearsals, Aguilera gives a magnificent vocal performance. Had she made it through the real thing without the error, her rendition may have gone down with Whitney Houston's 1991 performance as the best in Super Bowl history. Instead, it will be remembered in infamy, all because of a simple mistake. The people I have heard talking about the NA really did not care she missed a few words they thought the rendition itself sucked. They actually have the nerve to compare it the Whitney Houstons. Some time you just have to wonder who writes this crap. |

Personally, I don't need the anthem to remind me of the freedom afforded to me by our Constitution. To each his own I suppose.

Re: The Correct Singing Of The National Anthem
Quote:
"After America’s entrance into World War I, Major League Baseball games often featured patriotic rituals, such as players marching in formation during pregame military drills and bands playing patriotic songs. During the seventh-inning stretch of game one of the 1918 World Series, the band erupted into “The Star-Spangled Banner.” The Cubs and Red Sox players faced the centerfield flag pole and stood at attention. The crowd, already on their feet, began to sing along and applauded at the end of the song. Given the positive reaction, the band played the song during the next two games, and when the Series moved to Boston, the Red Sox owner brought in a band and had the song played before the start of each remaining contest. After the war (and after the song was made the national anthem by a congressional resolution in 1931), the song continued to be played, but only on special occasions like opening day, national holidays and World Series games. During World War II, baseball games again became venues for large-scale displays of patriotism, and technological advances in public address systems allowed songs to be played without a band. “The Star-Spangled Banner” was played before games throughout the course of the war, and by the time the war was over, the pregame singing of the national anthem had become cemented as a baseball ritual, after which it spread to other sports.

Re: The Correct Singing Of The National Anthem
Is there a rule somewhere stating how the anthem should be sung? Maybe they should start handing out the anthem handbook before hiring these singers.

Re: The Correct Singing Of The National Anthem
Honestly everyone screws it up. The only people that sing it right are the Military chorus members. You may get all of the words right but once you slow down the tempo and put your own personal stamp on the song you have screwed it up.
I don't get upset about it anymore people don't know any better and they are not trying to be disrespectful. Intent is everything as far as I'm concerned. No ill intent, no harm done. It's like being stupid in public, some people just don't know any better. |
