And part of this switch to the 3-4 means getting players that have both experience in playing the defense and/or are versatile enough to adjust to the new scheme.
My personal preference is a mix of the two. Cofield can excel as a 3-4 DE, and while he may do well as a 3-4 NT, personally I think it'd be a bit of a waste. The discussion is first and foremost on how players fit into scheme, and some fans like me hoping that the team uses new acquisitions to the best of their ability.

He played NT in college. He'll be fine at the NT spot.

"The thing about Barry is he played (nose tackle) in college and he's a big-body guy, so he's one of the few interior guys who can go either inside or outside. He has some versatility," said McCartney, a former director of personnel for the Eagles. "The one thing he hasn't had a chance to do a lot of is get up the field, and I think the Redskins' coaches did a good job of saying, 'We're going to utilize you in a variety of ways.'"
