What happened to the Goodmans or real personnel staff?

Re: Smoot Lays the Smack Down (Redskins vs. Panthers)

My Smackdown goes to the lack of overall talent on the team.

Here are my locks for the 2012 starting lineup if I was coach/gm. All the spots that are left blank I feel like are open to having new starters. Plus we still need depth across the board. I like our LG too, but the injury he had was pretty serious.

DE - BOWEN
NT - COFIELD
DE - JENKINS
OLB - ORAKPO
MLB - FLETCHER
MLB -
OLB - KERRIGAN
CB -
SS - LANDRY
FS - OTOGWE
CB -

WR - MOSS
WR -
LT - WILLIAMS
LG -
C - MONTGOMERY
RG - CHRIS CHESTER
RT -
TE - COOLEY
RB -
FB - YOUNG
QB -

You can switch Davis for Cooley, I like both and both will for sure have a spot on the roster next year. Thats one position I like our depth.

Moss wont start next year? Who else could possibly replace him, no one else on our roster. Doubt the Skins are going to draft two more receivers.

I also said those would be MY picks. Didnt say everyone else had to agree.

Keep Cofield and bench Fred Davis? Have you watched any of our games?

Smootsmack, any word on whether or not shanahan gets fired at years end if we don't do well this year? I'm hoping he sticks it out for our full rebuild. But I'm getting nervous with the media starting to grumble for his head...

Let me answer for Smootsmack- Hell no. I'll be the first to admit, MS has bungled the QB situation to an extent. However, look at the steamy pile of ish of a football team he was handed. An old, crappy roster bereft of speed and talent. You can't turn that around in 22 regular season games. We're getting younger and faster, but this team was so badly in the toilet when the current coaching staff took over. You don't hire a 2x Super Bowl champ only to fire him so quickly.

Things take time. And for god's sake, he's 3-3 not 0-6.

Also, who in the media is calling for Shanny's head?

It is real early, but looking forward to 2012.

DE - Cofield / Golston
NT - Jenkins / Neild
DE - Carriker / Bowen
OLB - ORAKPO
MLB - FLETCHER - maybe 1 more year left.
MLB -
OLB - KERRIGAN
CB -
SS - LANDRY
FS - OTOGWE
CB -

WR -
WR -
LT - WILLIAMS
LG - Don't know if KL makes it back from a very serious knee injury
C - MONTGOMERY / Cook
RG - CHRIS CHESTER
RT - Brown
TE - Davis
RB - Torain / Helu / Hightower
FB - YOUNG
QB -

We've got to shore up the run D. I think a healthy Jenkins will bolster the front 3. We've got problems at MLB, Fletch won't last forever and Rocky's up & down. Our CBs are sub-par at best.

I like what we have at TE, our OL has played above expectations, although the KL injury couldn't have come at a worse time. Our RBs are solid and MS has a knack for finding players there. Young has been playing well. We need a QB.

I think we've improved our overall talent at OL/DL/RB/FS this off-season. Got to build from the lines and middle of the field first. WRs can be found, it's funny how a top flight QB makes a good WR corps. We've got needs at QB, CB, ILB & WR next off-season.

We're struggling with the run right now and from what I see it's not a physical issue, its a gap discipline/angle/responsibility issue. Rak, LL stood out (in a bad way) Bowen still flowing too hard with stretch action away also. Our secondary is bad without OJA. Hall & Wilson aren't good cover corners. Smith made them both look real bad. One of the big pass plays was getting Rak in coverage on LaFell (good design by CAR) and Barnes not getting over to help. The nice throw/catch to Smith was on Wilson with 37 getting there late (that hasn't happened before). Smith just abused Hall / Wilson on a couple others.

Edit: not directed at you, but just to add, no way I see MS getting fired even if we lose out.

Seriously. Or Noll without Bradshaw? Jimmy Johnson without Aikman? Does Marv Levy win 4 straight AFC Championships without Jim Kelly?

It's actually one of the most impressive things about Gibbs 1.0- 3 Super Bowls with 3 different QB's, none of whom were all that great overall.

Smootsmack:

Big difference here is that Walsh - - once he righted the ship in SF - - never coached 10 years after Montana/Young were finished. Shanahan has...

Dungy never coached 10 years without Peyton Manning. Shanahan has.

Belichick only had 3 years (or was it 4) in Cleveland where a .500 season would have been acceptable as his coaching stint "without Brady". That is not a decade of coaching without his stud QB. Shanahan has been coaching "sans Elway" for 11.5 years now.

Shanahan's personnel decisions undid him. He eventually DID find a franchise-caliber QB to pilot one of the best 8-8 offenses ever, but a Swiss cheese defense and being reduced to using Tatum Bell ended whatever hopes he had of getting Denver back to glory. Oh, and he was too loyal to Slowik and didn't want to fire him.
