Re: What is the 2nd overall pick worth?

If you value RG3 as the first overall pick in a normal draft (available at 2nd overall b/c only of Andrew Luck), then he's worth the 6th pick, the 2013 first round pick, a 4th rounder in 2012, and one of the team's two 6th round picks in 2012.

Which is just a bit less than the price established in the Eli Manning trade.

I agree...unless the Rams say no. Then...I buckle and give them what they want

It's not like they have an alternative to that deal. I suppose they always could suck it up and take Matt Kalil at no. 2. Then we just trade with the Vikings.

Whatever leverage the Rams have here, they are going to need to create for themselves.

thats why i think the rams with try to play the 3 teams linked or some other unknown team trying to trading for the #2 pick against each other right now to drive up the price. i also believe they will want to get a trade down before the draft so they are guaranteed to get something for the #2 pick, because they could run the risk of teams not dealing with them anymore and going to the vikings.

Everything you say makes sense in theory but the Redskins don't really have the luxury to call someones bluff and be wrong. If this was year #1 for Shanny & Allen I would agree with you, but they are going into year #3 and MUST not get left out of the QB carousel. They can't afford to be sitting in Redskins park on April 28th going oh shucks I guess the Rams were serious about needing another pick to close this deal. I think the one thing that we are pretty sure of the last week is that RG3 is their #1 QB option. Isn't it about time they stop settling?

Sure they can.

I mean, you're right if the lose out as a result of recklessness instead of something more organic. I don't think any player is so important you absolutely can't win without him.

I mean, Stephen Bowen probably isn't as good of a player as Cullen Jenkins, but that's a bluff the Redskins called. Now instead of paying too much for Jenkins, we're paying too much for Bowen. The need was still filled though.

If they're going to gamble on the RG3 compensation, they'll almost certainly do it with Tannehill as a fallback plan. And the Rams will be well aware of that, as they'll have far more to lose than the Redskins do.

The Redskins are probably out of chances to get it wrong, but it's not like RG3 comes with a guarantee of success. The Redskins could win on draft day and lose during the season. Or they could call a bluff, lose on draft day, and improve a lot and win during the season. The offseason championship is only loosely correlated with the NFC East championship.

Suppose the Redskins believe that RG3 has a great chance to be a franchise QB. And while they like Tannehill they think he is a notch below that and will likely never be more then a good QB. Knowing that's how all the Redskins scouts and decision makers think would you still want to proceed with your passive plan?

Nothing is passive about knowing how to gauge the market and make the best offer.

If they like Tannehill but think/know that he will never be more than a good quarterback, then they should take Cousins or Foles or whoever they believe they can do more with.

You can't force the Rams to trade the RG3 pick. You can only make best offer and put the ball in their court. The difference between your opinion and mine is that I don't think adding more picks to the optimal trade value makes a "better" offer. It makes it worse.

I can't imagine why the Redskins staff or any staff would think that way about any prospect they want to draft.
No staff drafts a player, especially a QB, with the thought that 'he'll likely never be more then a good QB'
That's media/fan think not coach think.
I'm sure coach think is more along the lines of: when I get prospect X and teach prospect X skill A, B and C he could really become enter desired outcome here: franchise QB, pro bowl player etc.
