Re: WFT's Off-Season Thread
ASHBURN, Va. -- The Washington Football Team hosted former Bears veteran left tackle Charles Leno Jr. on Monday.
READ MORE: Former Bears Tackle Leno Coming to Visit That interest did not immediately mean a contract for Leno, who started every game over the last five years for Chicago on the blind side of the offensive line. But if Leno does decide to join Washington, he would likely be replacing veteran incumbent Cornelius Lucas, who was his former teammate with the Bears until Lucas joined Washington last offseason. In Chicago, Lucas was the backup/swing tackle and arrived in Washington with very little playing experience on the left side. He was pressed into that role because Geron Christian struggled and then was injured. Leno is viewed by most as the automatic starter on the left side (if he signs) and that perception didn't sit kindly with Lucas on Twitter. ------------- Leno is the 3rd best FA available per PFF .. I honestly never heard of the guy. Surprised to read hes started at LT for da bears for past 5 years. Leno (29 yrs old) had a 74.6 pff grade last year (58.6 pff for 2019), Lucas had a 78.2 in a smaller but still decent enough sample size. https://www.si.com/nfl/washingtonfoo...t-media-clowns I was somewhat confused by the Sharpe resigning bc I thought he looked awful when given the chance last year. Carry 9 OL Leno, Cosmi, Sharpe Flowers, Schweitzer, Charles Roullier, ismael Scherff, Schweitzer, Martin Moses, Lucas ^^ Thats 12 right there for 9 spots on the 53. Seems we have a self-inflicted roster issue. We signed serviceable but JAG vets like Lucas, Schweitzer, Flowers .. but also drafted depth project guys in Martin, Charles I guess you let guys battle it out but Id guess we end up cutting Sharpe, martin and Lucas ... but I like that Lucas can swing and Leno is just a LT |

Re: WFT's Off-Season Thread
Lots of other teams' coaches would love to have this type of so-called "self-inflicted roster issue". This is what building teams do - bring in bunches of players to compete and let their performances decide the roster spots. I like this situation.

we wouldnt have to add 3 vet free agent LTs over the past 2 years (lucas, sharpe, leno) if Christian (3R) or Charles (4R) panned out. We wouldnt have had to add Flowers if Martin (4R) had panned out. Charles should have a roster spot this year but it doesnt scream confidence that the team signed Leno, drafted Cosmi (2R) and added Flowers when we had Schweitzer and Scherff. Thats a 3rd and two 4th rounders that didnt claim a starting roster spot. We have a glut bc the draftees didnt pan out and the FO wants to compete now and not hope guys develop. |
