Schneed10 01-11-2006, 10:37 AM Kinda funny how someone was just telling me to get off my high horse and saying how my opinion was based on emotion and was ridiculous.
I didn't get my feelings hurt, if that's what you're implying. It's not an emotional issue for me, but because you have shown a tendency to be judgmental in this thread, I think it speaks to why you can't look at the spitting situation objectively, and I think it affects your credibility a bit.
jbcjr14 01-11-2006, 10:40 AM Just for the record Romo was fined $7500 for spitting at JJ Stokes in '97.
Inflation is a bitch.
hesscl34 01-11-2006, 10:42 AM What an embarrassment! That is not Joe Gibbs football! That boy better eat some humble pie and grow up!
Schneed10 01-11-2006, 10:43 AM Schneed, did you go to law go school?
No I didn't. I just had a couple law classes through grad school, but they focused more on contract law. I always thought spitting did not classify as battery, so I was wrong on that one. But it doesn't really change my stance, since the definition Matty posted indicates that Spitting is seen as equivalent to Punching. They should be treated the same in football too.
I just mean to say, in this entire thread, that Taylor should not have been ejected. Spitting is wrong, but not more so than throwing a punch.
firstdown 01-11-2006, 10:43 AM Maybe the fine was only 17,000 because Taylor got jacked in the side of the head and there was no penalty for that and that off set some of the fine.

I think there is some truth to this. Portis got fined $20K for wearing the wrong socks, I think that says everything.

My view that spitting is a more heinous act than throwing a punch is my objective opinion. I thought the same exact way when Romo did it, and I feel the same way now that one of our guys is guilty of the same thing. Despite what you may think my opinion is not based on emotion and I don't see how I'm passing judgement by holding this opinion. You're telling me my view is ridiculous and based on emotion, so who's the one passing judgement??
You feel that spitting and punching should be treated the same... despite the fact a few people have layed out a couple of good posts as to why they aren't treated the same way in our society. It's not the black and white issue that you want it to be and frankly I'm surprised you seem to have such a narrow view of things, considering how open minded you usually are.

As I posted elsewhere (http://www.thewarpath.net/showthread.php?p=140400#post140400), I don't think that it necessarily does say it all:
My understanding with CP is that it was an escalating fine - the first violation had a low fine, the second was $20k, and, if he had done it a third time, he was going to get suspended. I'm not saying that "ticky-tack" stuff should get the same merit as spitting but, rather, that, repeat violations will always get more attention than first time violations.
Somebody responded that Taylor spit on TJ Houshmanzadeh previously, so that could kill my theory, but I don't think the CP $20k fine can be looked at in a vacuum.
Warpath 01-11-2006, 10:56 AM When I was watching the game I didn't hear Mike Carey say all those things. I did not hear him say that Sean Taylor was ejected for spitting, I also didn't hear him say anything about pittman is not going to be penalized for retaliation. I have the game on dvd and there is no audio on the ref when he made those calls. The booth even kept saying over and over that the refs made a mistake for throwing Taylor out, meaning they didnt hear the call either. Its weird seeing this video with actual audio on it, because it was definitely not heard at all during the game. I also did not see Taylor fighting the penalty and Carey was right on the spot so I just assumed he saw something more than I could from home. Go skins....get ready to post those beer counts again....
Sheriff Gonna Getcha 01-11-2006, 11:11 AM Personally I thought an ejection for spitting at another player was appropriate.
To be perfectly honest, if that was Roy Williams spitting on Clinton Portis I'd say he deserved to be suspended for 2 games so the same should go for Taylor. Absolutely disgusting. That is NOT a Gibbs-type player. I don't care how talented he is, that is just absolutely classless. To boot, he lied to Gibbs, Williams and his teammates about it.
