NFL Network: Bears' Briggs, 31st Pick for Skins' 6th Pick?

Maybe someone like Longtimefan can speak to this point, but I don't understand this notion that we've recently "de-emphasized the draft" Don't we have a history dating back to the days of George Allen of employing this "picks for vets" philosophy? That's nearly 40 years. I suppose that's recent, maybe.

And is the problem, if you choose to call it that, then that Snyder is trying to relive the glory years of back when he was a fan by employing the same strategy?

This one is puzzling, at least to me. LB is a fairly deep position for us. Briggs is a great player, but can we afford to pay him $20 mil guaranteed (which is what I heard on SportsTalk 980 this afternoon)? That could mean that some more cap casualties are coming -- such as P. Daniels and R. Wynn -- that would leave us even shorter on the D line. The Skins have kinda let it be know that they aren't crazy about the highly rated D linemen in the draft (Branch, Adams, etc.), so maybe they have someone (or more than one someone) ID'd in the vicinity of the 31st pick. This COULD be a good deal if we can also shore up the D line. Does anyone see a trade involving Rocky McIntosh if this deals goes down?

Tim Crowder, Adam Carriker, Anthony Spencer, Justin Harrell are all really good D lineman who could available at 31....
I said this earlier- this draft is the deepest for D-lineman that I can ever remember. Maybe we're cognizant of that and have some later 1st rd picks graded pretty highly.

I say we keep Rocky realizing that Marcus is 30 and coming off surgery, Fletcher-Baker will be 32 when the season starts, Marshall is 31, injuries are bound to happen....

I heard Kiper make the same point on Colin Cowherd's show about a month ago. I think he was speaking in terms of the last few years -- giving away the 3rd and 4th for Lloyd, a 3rd for Duckett, this year's 2nd for Rocky ...

If you look at the past 4-5 years compared to the mid-to-late 90's when Casserly was here, we had a full compliment of draft picks just about every season. So it's a big departure from that time frame.

Essentially though, you're right -- Allen traded away picks for veterans; and after Darrell Green was drafted in '83 through Bobby Wilson in 1991, the Redskins didn't have one single 1st round draft pick. So yes, it has been a staple of this franchise to favor free agent veterans over unproven draft picks. The problem is, in this era of free agency and the salary cap, the smart, successful teams have figured out that this isn't the way to go.

This is fuuny. We think we are giving up too much and the Bears fans think we should trade striaght up for the sixth pick.

I hope that's not it. I mentioned earlier about the age of our LBs and injuries. Both Rocky (knee) and Marcus (knee,elbow) went under the knife in the offseason. Lemar Marshall turns 31 this year and is built more like safety than a LB, especially a MLB. Marcus turns 30 this year and Fletcher turns 32. Aside from these guys we have pretty much nobody. Khary Campbell is a special teams guy, and that's it really. Maybe that's what this move is about. :confused:

If Gibbs and co. decieded to take the word of a position coach rather than evaluate the first pick we had last draft, they should have thier heads examined. The fact that no one would be able to evaluate him other than Lindsey would be a joke.

Is it the fact that Rocky can't play, or is it the fact that Williams doesn't know how to use him? We know AA can play, but he looked as if he didn't belong in the NFL under Williams. I know Williams had a fabulous first 2 years with us but maybe just maybe we are starting to see why he was such a lowsey head coach. I need to know how dumb you have to be not be able to understand the weakside LB position? It's not like anyone is being asked to split the atom, or maybe they are under Williams?

good call smoot.remember the ramskins.obviously mcintosh turned out to be a bust other wise they wouldnt even think of trading for briggs.marshall is old and not that good anymore.briggs is a 4 year player so we would be getting a young player who is a pro bowler and was in the superbowl last year.plus he needs get out of urlachers shadow.this would be a good deal imo.

I'm trying not to panic but this trade is so idiotic that Gibbs should leave the team next season if Vinny and Dan are going to mess up all the progress that he makes... the BIG splash is over rated!

Mel Kiper: It's right now a possibility, because it makes sense for both teams. The Redskins have a recent history of de-emphasizing the draft. They're going for the big splash and Briggs is a Pro Bowl entity. They traded up to get Rocky McIntosh and now, they'd be discarding him and putting him in a backup role. He's poised to be a starter and now you're going to go out and get Briggs. I don't have a problem with getting Briggs, but what about McIntosh? Now, he'd be a backup again. The Redskins already have a guy in McIntosh ready to fill that role and if they go get Briggs is an upgrade, but you're giving up the 6th pick of the draft. If the Bears keep Briggs, he will likely sit out most of the season. On paper, the trade would serve both parties well. I just question the Redskins not having any young players come in via the draft. They don't have a 2nd, 3rd or 4th-round pick this year, remember. That McIntosh trade can't be lost in all of this. They gave up a 2nd-round pick in this draft and a 6th-rounder last year to get him. And now all of a sudden, he's going to be pushed to a backup role. I would understand the trade more from the Bears standpoint than the Redskins' standpoint.
Kiper is an idiot. He repeats the same thing over and over again about McIntosh. At the beginning he says it would make sense for both teams and then at the end he says he doesn't really understand it from the Redskins standpoint.
