Re: Cap Room

The fact that they still haven't gotten Dockery signed is pretty concerning in my opinion. It's still only mid-January, and they have six more weeks until he hits the open market. But every day that the 'Skins don't offer Dockery something in the right neighborhood, that's another day that Dockery will be thinking about and getting comfortable with the concept of free agency.

'Skins need to act on him soon.

i doubt it. i think tagging him would mean he gets a 1 year deal where we pay him the average of the top 5 guards in the league's salary. knowing the deal hutchinson got in minnesota, im sure the average is quite high and he isnt worth THAT much IMO

I think the tag would be a very reasonable option with DD. We have to avoid putting any more big contract stuff into the 2008 and 2009 seasons, and the franchise tag would allow us to load about 5-6 million of our cap space into this year to have dock on board without having to make a commitment to him for the 2008 season and beyond.

good point but im not sure if we can really handle 5-6 million for next year when we need a lot of upgrades on defense. if we could do that and still get the required defensive upgrades i would be all for ithe could be had at probably a 3 mil per year deal i would estimate if we were to actually sign him. hutchinson is getting 7 mil per year i think

Re: Cap Room

What about placing the transition tag on Dockery instead of the franchise tag? We may not get 2 first rounders if he signs elsewhere but at least it gives the Skins the match if other offers come in. I believe the transition tag requires the following - I would assume Dockery is worth this:
  • A transition player has received a minimum offer of the average of the top 10 salaries of last season at the player's position or 120 percent of the player's previous year's salary, whichever is greater.
  • A transition player designation gives the club a first-refusal right to match within seven days an offer sheet given to the player by another club after his contract expires. If the club matches, it retains the player. If it does not match, it receives no compensation. Transition players can be signed from March 3 through July 22.

Sorry about that - I missed your post - is this what happened to Steve Hutchinson with the Seahawks to the Vikings in that the Vikings made the contract in a way the Seahawks had no chance to match?
