Broncos | Team could receive two first-day draft picks for Lelie
Tue, 22 Aug 2006 19:38:03 -0700
Updating previous reports, Jeff Legwold, of the Rocky Mountain News (http://www.kffl.com/link/168), reports the Denver Broncos (http://www.kffl.com/team/15/nfl) could receive two first-day draft picks from the Washington Redskins (http://www.kffl.com/team/37/nfl) in the three-team trade involving former Broncos (http://www.kffl.com/team/15/nfl) WR Ashley Lelie (http://www.kffl.com/player/622/nfl). If the Redskins (http://www.kffl.com/team/37/nfl) finish with a worse record than the Broncos (http://www.kffl.com/team/15/nfl) in 2006, Denver would receive the Redskins' first- and third-round picks. If the Redskins (http://www.kffl.com/team/37/nfl) finish with a better record than the Broncos, Denver would receive the Redskins' third- and fourth-round picks.

this is retarded...even if we finish with a better record than them...and it makes no senseWe won't finish with a worse record than the Broncos, but this clause is still rediculous. And who gives a 3rd and 4th for Duckett, much less a first and third.

We'll be exchanging first round picks, not giving one up completely.

Ok, that changes things then.

we better finish with a better record than the broncos...i cant go another draft without a first round pick

what happens if we have the same record? lolWhat I really dont like about this deal is that if we finish with a worse record than Denver, we dont pick on the first day. It's tough to improve your team like that.

I like our chances to finish better than Denver, but even if we do, it's still a 3 and 4 which is a great deal for Denver.

If we are gonna gamble, why not offer a 5th that would become a first and third if they have a better record than us. This is a win-win for Denver the way it is right now.

Here's how the deal would work, WE'RE NOT GIVING UP A 1ST!

Based on the teams' finish this season, the Broncos, at best, could end up with the Redskins' first- and third-round picks in the 2007 draft if the Redskins finish with a worse record than the Broncos.

In that scenario, the Broncos and Redskins would flip-flop first-round picks, with Denver moving up in the opening round and the Redskins moving down. The Broncos would then get the Redskins' third-round pick as well.

If the Redskins finish with a better record than the Broncos, Denver gets the Redskins' third- and fourth-round picks in April.

How many years does Ducket have left on his contract? He's a UFA at the end of the year. I'm betting we extend his deal though.

if we do swap first round picks we are talking about picks in the latefirst round. probably 25th or worse so its not that big of a deal if we have to swap them.

Yesssssssss...I love it, I was always saying that Portis was being overused and didn't think he had any business running up the middle as much as he does. Now maybe he'll be able to make it through the whole season without those knagging injurues.

As a budding lawyer Im always looking for ways to mess with the interpretation of contract language...so Im hoping that they forgot to put this part into the trade agreement. All stories specify "record" as the thing on which the trade turns. However, consider this scenario: We finish 10-6 or 11-5 and the Broncos finish a game or two better than us. However, we make it through the wild card rounds to the Superbowl, at which point we are automatically given the #31 or 32 pick regardless of record. If the record portion of the trade agreement has already been triggered, could we possibly end up with a better draft pick?

Now Im sure they thought of this during negotiations, but hey, always gotta look for the loopholes!
