I was a little confused over JLC's take as well.
I don't know how anybody can be disappointed in getting rid of this guy, especially if he was the leak from last season.

I wonder what this means for Mike Brown?
Mike Brown is a great safety but his legs are full of scar tissue, the Bears have been wanting to replace him for a while now as he never can seem to stay healthy. It would not suprise me one bit if AA does very well in Chicago. He played in the Cover-2 defense under Lovie Smith in St. Louis and frankly is surrounded by a much better defense than he had with the Redskins. And he'll be playing the position he's used to.
Not saying he's going to be a superstar but he's probably going to be a lot more productive than he was here. And the Bears aren't paying him that monster salary.

I'll third that. I think a lot of what he leaves out is the chemistry factor that stems from overpaying someone. Maybe the danny didn't want to pay him, but it's also a message to the team that you won't be the highest paid player in the nfl at your position if you don't perform up to it.
I realize this goes both ways & some players may feel mgmt. is going back on its word w/AA as they did w/Lavar, but teams in the salary cap era have to cut players or ask them to take a pay cut every year. I think this was a great move & could have a huge impact on the D, all for the better.
This has got me thinkin about Coles in 05. Got rid of him & the O had a much better year thereafter. This offseason is shaping up a lot like 05, few moves in free agency, dump some dead weight (AA), & get the #6 pick. Also have a young qb who started at the end of the year, though I don't want to draw any comparisons to the Ramsey situation!

Wow! I just saw this now.
Schneed, looks like you were right on. From the Post:
washingtonpost.com - nation, world, technology and Washington area news and headlines (http://washingtonpost.com)
"The Redskins and Archuleta agreed to postpone his original deadline of March 12 to receive his bonus payment in order to facilitate a trade, and the Bears, whose coach, Lovie Smith, has a strong relationship with the safety from their time together in St. Louis, ultimately agreed to pick up that $5 million payment as part of the deal, sources said, beating today's new deadline for the option."
IMO this is UNBELIEVABLE!!! Snyder pulled a real coup here. I don't know how we convinced them to give us a 6th rounder AND take the $5M bonus payment.
I didn't know they could but I'm loving it!
I'm not sure if it's a change in the CBA, or if Snyder's just getting smarter with the signing bonuses, but it's been a trend with our recent signings. Arch, Randle-El, Carter, Lloyd, Samuels, Rabach, Patten, Jansen, Thomas, Moss, Taylor all had their signing bonuses split over the first 2 years of the contract. I figured this was just a way to delay some money past the current year, but now I see how valuable it can be. If you screw up on a guy (Arch), you still have time to recoup some of the signing bonus.
As Frank the Tank once said, "It's genius!"
I agree, I posted comments in another thread which are applicable here in this one, so I'll paste:
If I can add one comment, absolutely genius move by the 'Skins.
- We cleared his contract off the 08 and 09 years, which helped immensely because our cap was getting heavy in those years.
- We got rid of a huge free agent mistake without taking a huge cap penalty.
- We actually got a 6th round pick for someone who is a complete bum in our system.
Setting up Archuleta's deal as $5 million guaranteed up front, and $5 million guaranteed one year later is what allowed us to make this move. If we had given him all $10 million up front, this move would have been impossible. Genius contract structuring by our front office, showing that they know how to plan for contingencies when going after free agents. It shows they actually put thought into what they're doing, rather than just running willy-nilly and buying up every player in sight.
Bravo, Danny, bravo.

And the real coup: now we sit here with $8 million in 2007 space. We don't need $8 million for rookies.
To me this is saying loud and clear that the Dre Bly deal is going down any day now.
Listen to the money talk!

Wow.
Having the Bears take his contract off our books is a huge favor. Throwing in a draft pick is a bonus.
Good work, front offiice. You're forgiven for signing him.
Seriously though, who could've predicted him turning from a weightroom monster to a marshmallow Peep after putting the burgandy and gold on? We WERE all excited when we signed him, helped by all of the articles about his work ethic and physique.
I'm glad this is over with. I wish him good luck, except for against us.

Just cause the guy is a workout freak doesn't mean he can play football. I work out all the time but I can't cover Jason Witten. And apparently neither can AA.
