I'm gonna vote for Spags here, I see what he's done in Philly and what he did with the Giants d this season and I'll admit I've been impressed. I think a young up and comer is the way to go in this league, I've taken notice of the trend around the league and I think we should go that way too instead of taking some retread from some other team. Schwartz could be a good candidate but I haven't been impressed with his D in Tennessee, I think it's been too inconsistent.
What did Spags do in Philly? He had a good season in NY this year, but IMO his resume is too short too qualify as a HC. This is his first season as a DC.

Spagnuolo... if you don't know why, you need to read this article. If Charlie Casserley and Bobby Beathard BOTH give him a vote, that's enough for me!!! But also... what a cool story about him being an intern for the Skins in the early '80s!

Giants' Spagnuolo is mentioned for opening*-*-*The Washington Times, America's Newspaper (http://www.washingtontimes.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080122/SPORTS01/787676151/1005/SPORTS)

Spagnuolo is not a bad choice but is his style of defense similar to Blache's or are we going to have problems with styles and controls.

Time to reason through this list and see who the next Redskins' head coach is.

Assumption #1: The Redskins already know who their Head Coach is.

Assumption #2: The Redskins' next HC already knows he has the job.

The reasoning for this, is that the coach has to have been a integral part of the naming of the staff. He had to be.

Why would the Redskins hand pick a coordinator, and then promote from within on the other coordinator? Why has Gregg Williams withdrawn his name? And finally, what are the Redskins waiting for?

First of all, I think we can eliminate Spagnuolo from the discussion. I mean, it's somewhat possible the Redskins could have a wink-nod deal in place for Spagnuolo, but that doesn't make a whole lot of sense. Rather, the wait until post-super bowl is the perfect smokescreen for the Redskins to act like the coaching search is still going on. Don't buy it. Snyder already has his guy. It's not Spagnuolo, and it sure as hell ain't Cowher.

That leaves Fassel, Meeks, and Schwartz. Meeks is the candidate that received the least amount of hype out of the three, but that doesn't mean he isn't the guy. However, I would gamble that he would be the least likely out of the three.

Assuming I read this one correctly, the only logical candidates are Fassel and Schwartz. One of them has the job lined up already, and the other likely doesn't know he doesn't have it yet.

There was a reason that Williams announced that he was out of the running over a week before the job will be given, and I believe it's a PR reason. The incoming coach will have far less animosity to deal with from the fans if they have time to digest the fact that Williams is going elsewhere. Look for Williams to sign somewhere as a coordinator before the Super Bowl.

That's why the Redskins are waiting on the announcement (and it's probably going to leak at some point prior to the SB, it's hard to keep the wraps on this type of info for long). It's either Fassel or Schwartz. The only evidence we have for one over the other is the internal promotion of a defensive coordinator, and the external courting of the offensive guy. That tells me that the hire is probably a guy who's got his rep on the defensive side of the ball. The final piece of evidence is that Fassel didn't get the job when Danny had the chance to hand it to him. The businessman that he is, he likely saw his window of opportunity to name Fassel HC close.

Official Prediction: Jim Schwartz is hired as Head Coach of the Washington Redskins on February 5th, 2008, two days after the super bowl.

Nice post. I'd love to see Schwartz here, have wanted him since like December. However, I can see the advantage in Fassel in that he's been there before and he can help guide Zorn on the offensive side while the more experienced Blache handles the defense.

Meeks I honestly don't know enough about.

Definitely not Fassel and not Cowher. The others, maybe worth a shot, but options should be kept open.

I agreed with everything you wrote up until the very last part.

I think Jim Fassel will be named if your logic is right. It has been said that the only reason Fassel hadn't been named yet is because of the outpouring of us fans puking and cursing the name Fassel... if letting GW now in order to let people forget about him is true, that sets up Fassel to be HC.

Personally, I am pulling for Spags or McDaniels and hope that's what the wait is for.

Spagnuolo from what I've read, has a reputation as a great leader who gets guys to respect him, play hard for him, and LIKE him/have fun (that REALLY takes some talent), can get a defense to get some SACKS and was Skins intern (i still say what great "true Redskin" story)!

McDaniels is only 31 and you KNOW he had control over that rediculous offense this year (Belichick is a defensive guy)... meaning he could be our OWN Cowher (here for the next 15 years) and between him and Zorn (the QB guru) we would be grooming explosion on offense and stability on defense (with Blache).... The only problem with McDaniels is that he has come out and said that he doesn't think that he is ready to be a HC.

Josh Mcdaniels, a Belichek student who could also show the organization how to manage players without breaking the bank

His name kept being tied to Rex Ryan's, and now Blache has been named the defensive coordinator. It just doesn't make sense. If Fassel was simply the means to get to the end that was Ryan, and we couldn't get Ryan and to Danny, that meant no offer for Fassel, what is different now?

No one in the media has any clue what the Redskins are doing here, and that's because they are trying to follow a lead that was never given. There's no reason at all to think that Snyder, as smart as he is, would decide that Spags is his lead candidate simply because he beat the Packers. The Giants beat the Dallas Cowboys, and during that week, the "mystery candidate" was Fassel. Obviously it isn't Spags or McDaniels. Total smokescreen.

Plus, why would the Titans want to speak to Gregg Williams? They don't have an opening at defensive coordinator.

Except, of course, unless they do.

I personally don't want to see a guy like Schwartz get the job. He's never even been a HC. Let him learn somewhere else. I'd much rather have Fassel than Schwartz. At least he has HC experience and has taken a team to the SB.
