Fred Davis is arguably our best receiver.

This, plus a little: FD is our ONLY playmaking receiver.

As nice as this is, I don't think the NFLPA would allowed them to put those types of clauses in contracts. It's a given that if he's suspended, it'll be without pay so that doesn't need to be in the contract. Bonus money on the other hand will not be able to be recouped. That's why you don't give huge bonuses to guys with questionable character. Not positive that the new CBA allowed them to do more with behavior and contracts, but I haven't heard anything.

None of this matters. Signing bonus money can be recouped. Just make sure his bonus is a signing bonus, rather than a roster bonus, and there is no real financial risk. If FD gets in trouble, cut him and walk away.

Fred Davis is arguably our best receiver.
I guess the question is, where does Fred Davis rank in the entire league? Top half? Top 10? Top 5?That's absurd to think he's not valued much to other teams but he means the world to "us".Raw counting stats? Top 10 is my guess without looking up all the TE stats.
I know last year in 12 games his numbers were up there with Vernon Davis, Jerimichael Finley and Owen Daniels in 16 games.
Davis career stats actually compare quite favorably to Jerimichael Finely.

The trickier question is about talent level i.e. what would Davis numbers look like in a different situation?
BTW: I'm scratching my head over this part:
That's absurd to think he's not valued much to other teams but he means the world to "us"Then don't think that *shrugs*

Power Ranking the 50 Best Active NFL Tight Ends | Bleacher Report (http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1045340-nfl-power-ranking-the-50-best-active-tight-ends#/articles/1045340-nfl-power-ranking-the-50-best-active-tight-ends/page/37)

this article has him at 17 and funny enough it has cooley at 14, but if you think davis is among the top ten tight ends in the nfl take a look at this list. this list seems to be pretty solid imo. and at best i would say fred falls in line right around 15, right with cooley. thats not saying he can't be more elite, but don't kid yourself thinking he is one of the top 5 te's in the nfl.

and why would it be absurd for him to have way more value to us than another team like say the ravens, they could use a tight end but doubt they want/need davis anywhere near they way we do.

FD needs two things to be with this group:

1. A QB that's better than anything we had last year
2. Fight for the ball and take advantage of his size

he also needs to work on his spelling

After looking a bit, seems they can include clauses to protect them with signing bonuses. However, when the Falcons tried to recoup their money, it was denied and Vick got to keep his signing bonus money. Guess he didn't have that clause in his.

No. I posted a link about this yesterday. Vick got to keep his ROSTER bonus but had to return his SIGNING bonus. There is a difference.

So if we make FD's bonus money all signing bonus, there is no risk, because in the worst case he'll have to return it.

Gotta keep FD, and sign Dwayne Bowe to replace Moss:)

Apologize and thanks for the correction.
