The franchising of Washington's Fred Davis - NFC East Blog - ESPN (http://espn.go.com/blog/nfceast/post/_/id/36137/the-franchising-of-fred-davis)

Let's discuss... Should he get the tag? Cost is around 5 mil for the year. If he test positive for drugs he will be suspended for the year. If it worth while to place the tag on him or another player like Laron Landry?

I'm totally fine with it. And it doesn't mean they can't negotiate with him for a longer term deal I don't believe

It does mean the franchise tag can't go on someone else.

It's a cheap franchise and given his situation he couldn't possibly get too salty about it as is the norm when a player gets tagged. Considering he was one of our shiniest offensive players this year and our other TE may or may not ever play at a high or even average level again I am down with it. Who else would be a good tag for us? Landry probably...anyone else taggable without it being problematic?

Im ok with it because it doesn't cost too much but I am worried about him as a repeat drug offender

Let's be honest though...a healthy Davis over 16 games is a great weapon for us. The drawback about the potential one-year ban is almost a non-issue for me. Who realistically replaces him and his potential production?

We can still give him the transition tag.

I'd prefer to sign FD to a real deal and then use the franchise tag on Landry.

Despite his off-field problems, FD is the only real playmaking receiver that we have.

I think we should be able to keep him without the franchise tag. Even if he goes out and looks, I doubt many teams will offer up a lot knowing he's one strike away from being out for the season, you talk nice to him, let him look, and then make a reasonable offer. He is a good weapon, but it's not the end if he were to hook up somewhere else.
