GMScud 08-25-2009, 11:32 AM It's impressive in size and technology, no doubt, but it probably doesn't look awesome while in the stadium, as I posted before...it has to be a huge distraction when trying to watch the field. It stretches from the 20 to the 20 yard-line, you can't escape it.
It's well suited for a Madden tournament, but not really for a live game. It gets in the way visually as well as physically on punts.
I agree. Unless you're sitting in the lower level, most fans probably aren't even watching the field.
FRPLG 08-25-2009, 12:11 PM Maybe the point of the 85 foot rule was that a regular score baord would be fine at that height. But a screen half the size of the field? I doubt it.

Who knows when the rule was written. Maybe when it was written most punters couldn't punt it that high?
FRPLG 08-25-2009, 12:16 PM All I know is that Jerrah's assertion that it won't be an issue in general is bullpoop. It's gonna get hit a dozen times this year.

There are some folks on a Cowboys board who went to the game the other night and talked about this. The general consensus of fans who seem sane (a minority on a Cowboys board) is that those in the lower levels are not distracted but those in the upper levels cannot escape the presence of the screens to focus on the field. Some said that they could not see the field well because the screens were in the way.
I'm laughing at you Dallas, not with you. :laughing2
BDBohnzie 08-25-2009, 01:44 PM I can't believe how long this thread has gone on for...
Dallas did testing before they installed the screens. Mat McBriar was hitting the 100 foot mark with regularity, yet Jerry Jones still installed it at 90 feet. McBriar is also more of a directional punter, so the height won't affect him as much.
It's not a fail on Jones' part. He had the screens installed at more than the league minimum and do so knowing the conditions of his own punter.
I also think Trapasso and Hentrich were trying to hit it, and being a preseason game, who cares if they did...
We'll see how it unfolds, but I honestly don't see this being a major issue. A minor one, maybe, but I don't think we'll see more than a few do-overs over the course of the season.

Where did you ever read/hear that McBriar did testing? McBriar admitted publicly just this week that he was never asked, nor did he, kick to test in the new stadium for height issues.
SmootSmack 08-25-2009, 02:30 PM He did testing at the Alamodome a couple of years back

** After seeing Mat McBriar punt inside the Alamodome I am more convinced that he will hit the digital board at Cowboys Stadium a ton this year. I know there's some directional kicking involved but he's hitting that thing this year.

Yeah because the stadium was built with the screens in mind so it'd be too late to test in the new stadium... are you saying that there's going to be a huge diff in that stadium vs the one he did kick in?
You never cease to provide humor on this site.

But the stadium, with the ridiculous screens, will be there long after McBriar is gone. To plan a stadium around just one punter is lunacy.
