So Rodanthe has the KOA with the water slides and the go carts and all those things right? If that's the one back in the 80's we slept in my buddies van just about every weekend running the beach looking for waves. That's when they only had the water slide by the KOA. We got to know the guy who ran the water slide and would smoke a few and go sliding after hours. Those things are allot faster when you cut the water flow way back.

I dont remember any water slides at the KOA.
One thing that did stick out in my mind was all the toads everywhere.
Especially at night, there were hundreds of them, and in the morning there would be dozens of dead ones in the roads.
I remember some guy there would fly a kite at night with lights on it.
Everyone would freak out thinking they were seeing a UFO.

On a positive note, usually the fishing is KICK ASS the day.....or some hours before the storm starts to kick things up.....

You wouldn't want to be out there on a boat with those swells. Hell, even trying to secure that boat when you got back would be hell. Same reason all surfers all storm to the beach before the hurricane comes in. Now if you are talking about pier fishing, might be a different thing.

I have been in 4 major ones, I would NEVER knowingly/willingly go towards one. Nothing to fawk with and you be wasting emergency personal to have to come save your ass if you got in trouble.
This.
Katrina came right through my town - I experienced her eye - and killed folks on my block. I was just lucky she didn't kill me, as a couple of large trees fell very near the house but not on it.
Completely avoid hurricanes if you can.

Guys I am flying back to Washington Dulles via Charlotte late Friday night (flight leaves Charlotte at around 10:30PM).
Based on preliminary weather forecasts I should be ok. Anyone flown around a hurricane? I assume there will be a ton of flight cancellations?

I think he is talking about fishing before the winds and swells start to kick up. Its been said that the fish can feel the change in preasure and start to feed. Not sure if its true or not because I always catch fish.
I can officially get behind this F Hurricanes thread now. Irene just borked my weekend travel plans. Tons of flights are getting canceled already including mine.

I'll second that. Earthquakes and hurricanes in one week? Geez mother nature, leave us alone for a little bit.
