53Fan 08-09-2009, 12:05 PM I like Mason. No one is saying he doesn't have talent or doesn't deserve a shot. Even Zorn likes him. He just doesn't like him better than Betts. Betts has been getting great reviews all camp and for good reason. The coaches aren't making it up because they owe him anything. They didn't draft him. Don't take my word for it, read what the reports from the coaches about Betts have been saying. Mason has potential to be good in this league, I don't deny that and have no reason to, but when people want to cut a proven back that the coaches seem pretty high on just so a preseason favorite can make the team and project him as the next Barry Sanders even though 2 other teams didn't see enough in him to make them think they should "lock him up", it just doesn't make a whole lot of sense. I think right now he's at a disadvantage because I think the coaches are looking for more of a speed back. That's why we brought Alridge and Dorsey in. Some good players are going to be cut, you can't keep them all, and with Portis and Betts on the team, who I think the coaches give a longer playing life to than the fans, what exactly would Mason do? Sit on the bench until they retired? He has not yet proven he can play ST's and he is being given the opportunity. What more can he ask for? Standout on teams Mason and you may make the team.

Jeremy Bridges sitting out with an ankle sprain from yesterday's scrimmage, but Heyer and Mike Williams are back on the field practicing.
Orakpo practicing with the D-lineman today.
Anthony Alridge out today with a sprained toe from the scrimmage.
Santana Moss still out, nursing that hamstring.
Devin Thomas not a full go, but had his helmet on and participated in some drills.
mrreddman 08-09-2009, 02:53 PM I would love to see either Dorsey or Aldridge make this team. We need a little speed scat back/ return guy to change the pace sometimes. I do like Mason but dont see a roster spot for him unless Betts or Rock gets injured. If some other player(s) show they can perform well on ST, Rock may be on the way out.

It looks like Collins is going to be getting the short end of the playing time stick versus Colt.

Whether it is by design from coaches or instinctive reaction, QB Jason (http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/players/playerpage/407793) Campbell (http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/players/playerpage/407793) is checking down to RBs and TEs most of the time. Conversely, QB Colt Brennan (http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/players/playerpage/1245555) likes to take more shots down field and the result is not always positive.

tryfuhl 08-09-2009, 03:27 PM Here's another one of my personal feelings. I like Collins but apparently the team does not think he's a viable #1. DS has issues with JC and goes outside the team to locate another QB instead of letting Collins take over to see if he can handle the team. He then explores drafting a QB which would learning from scratch instead of making Collins step up. I think the team is seeing him a simply an older vet to fill in if someone goes down.
I know he (Collins) was not planned to play today according to the team but when thrown in either he had a bad day or he simply was not ready cause to me it sounded like he struggled today. Until the end of practice. Brennen sounded to have had a pretty good day as well as Daniel. Perhaps it's time to get younger there also. Just saying. ;)
I don't think that you really want to put Collins in at number 1 at all unless you're going into playoff chances and Campbell gets hurt. While he hasn't had his body worn down from being a backup for so long, I think that at this point you're looking to see what your younger guys can bring to the table.. whether they can lead a team, whether to use them as trade bait, or whether to cut them.
tryfuhl 08-09-2009, 03:30 PM Betts is a good #2 RB, and filled in nicely when Portis went down, but keep in mind there was not a lot of teams knocking on his door to steal him away from the Skins when his contract came up. He wanted to test the open market and got no phone calls. My only concern is we have 3 RB's all around the same age and when one decides its time to hang up the cleats I'm betting the other two will be thinking the same thing only cause of age. The team needs to start looking for a Replacement for Portis who can be developed/groomed until Portis is ready to say goodbye. Someone young and talented like a Mason. I'm in no way saying he's ready to take over for Portis right now. but I'm sure he would do just as well a job as Betts did.
Nobody wanted Betts or Cartwright, so yeah... I like Rock but he's a special teamer, not a running back.. Betts is a number 3 on a stacked team at best.. he's a number 2 for what we have available but that's about it
Maybe if he gets the ball more that will change but yeah

When Collins ran his 40 yard dash at the start of camp, they timed him with an hourglass. :)

Whoever the Skins keep, I hope they use him. I'd love to see them employ a 3 back system similar to the Ravens and Giants, especially if one of the backs is a change of pace speedster that can take it the distance.

Anyone know how Dorsey is doing on teams? He was the CFL special teams player of the year and he has some nifty kick returns on youtube. Is he being given a shot to compete as a kick-off/punt returner?
