Got powered back sometime this afternoon, not sure what time.

Hey, question for you guys. Like how long would you say raw meat in the fridge would be good for. I had a couple of steaks I was going to cook and it still looks and smells fresh, though there is some discoloration just along the edges, but not mold or anything like that.

Well people sometime age steaks. I would say that if they smell fresh, they are probably good. If you are a bit concerned, you can probably use a sharp knive and slice the discoloration.

NOTE: Some places say 4 hours...although a lot of times I leave meat to defrost, but I guess this may be different.

In the meantime I think they said 4hours for stuff that was in the fridge and up to 48hours for stuff in a full freezer or 24hours if the freezer was half full.

Yeah, if that's the case I would have to throw out everything, we've been down for nearly 48 hrs.

I was thinking of doing that, but I didn't want to "cheat" you know. I think I'm going to go for it. Hell, I used to eat the shit they served in the Navy all the time and I'm still alive.

Crap, that sucks!

This isn't the link I was referring to before but it should work: Refrigerated Food and Power Outages: When to Save and When to Throw Out | FoodSafety.gov (http://www.foodsafety.gov/keep/charts/refridg_food.html)

Okay, so I stopped when they said discard pizza. LOL...I know I've eaten lots of pizza that was just sitting on the counter for a day or two.

Confirmed w/wife (she is certified by VB Health Dept for Food Svc Mgmt for our old restaurant). If the steaks were in the fridge, and the fridge not opened (or only just a couple times), steaks should be cooked tonight and will be OK. If not cooked tonight, throw them out. Would not trust chicken after 48 hrs.
