Monkeydad 11-19-2013, 11:09 AM Execution and playcalling is a problem so I say change the coordinators.
However, I believe Allen and Mike Shanahan need to be kept so we can see what they can do with a full salary cap.
When all we can afford is Josh Morgan and Brandon Meriweather and we can't afford to upgrade from Tyler Polumbus to protect our franchise QB...were you really expecting a lot of success.
We've OVERACHIEVED as far as I see it after this cap hit. It should have really buried us, but we managed to win the division last year despite it. This year, it's really having it's intended impact. We don't have the talent any other team has. Even Tampa Bay and Jacksonville can afford better WRs and DBs than us and it's starting to show.
We're going to go shopping big time in this offseason and next year will be the year of NO EXCUSES from our GM and Coach. No more Vinny remnants, no bogus cap penalty...no excuses.
Even through this cap hell, we've managed to draft some great young talent and once we can reinforce the roster holes with proven players instead of "who needs a job?" guys, we should have a very good team around Griffin, Morris, Reed, etc.
Think how things would be different if we had Garcon AND Vincent Jackson...Eric Winston or Ryan Clady at Right Tackle, a secondary with guys like Brandon Carr instead of Brandon Meriweather, or Brent Grimes, Dawan Landry...these are the guys we lost a shot at and not just one of them, we could have signed all of them.
The impact that penalty had was MASSIVE and we didn't really realize how much it hurt us while we were cruising to the playoffs last season. Now, it's effects and the reality of it are setting in.
skinsguy 11-19-2013, 11:19 AM Really? I didn't know that! lol..my point was Gibbs spent almost all of his time on offense. Yeah the coach has extra responsibilities...but there's no reason for a head coach to stay til 3am to be a winner. We'll agree to disagree.
Obviously you didn't, because your prior point was that a head coach doesn't need to stay late to be successful and you used your "inside source, lol" from an era in which Gibbs was pretty much done with coaching (1992) to prove your point that a coach doesn't need to work late to be a winner. And then added that Gibbs was the one (1992) that stayed late, lol! Such a contradiction. And then I point that fact out to you, and then you say your point was that Joe Gibbs spent almost all of his time on offense - lol! Sorry, but you did a piss poor job of proving your point. I'll certainly agree to disagree, because you're wrong, lol!

I agree with you. I'm all for giving Shanahan another year to prove he's the guy to turn things around, but it sounds like if the front office is not willing to give him an extension (and right now I do have to say there's more reason not to) then I doubt Mike would stay as a lame duck head coach. Then again, maybe he doesn't see it that way? In the end, I just want this team to win. I don't care who the head coach is, I just want this team winning on a regular basis. Playoffs, Super Bowls, etc...

The problem with just replacing the coordinators is you almost have to extend Shanny in order to attract quality candidates and free agents. Nobody (of quality) is going to come to a team with a lame duck head coach and an owner with a history of an itchy trigger finger. We'd get people to fill the slots but will they be an improvement over what we already have?

That's another great point. What coordinators would come in for possibly just one season, knowing a new coaching regime would probably not retain them? It would be a huge gamble. You almost have to go ahead and extend Shanahan's contract now for that to be realistic.

The flip side is that he's said on many occasions that he told Snyder 'unless you're going to give me the full 5 years, don't hire me'. So if I'm Snyder I'm throwing that right back at him. I'll give you the full 5 years but nothing more until you prove to me you've earned another 3. Make him match the commitment...if that's the route they choose.
I saw someone mention on Twitter that Coughlin won the SB in 2007 as a lame duck coach. So it's not really a deal breaker.
skinsguy 11-19-2013, 12:35 PM This is true, so who knows what happens? Ultimately, I don't care who the coach is, I just want this team winning and playing championship football.

I think the difference there is that Coughlin hadn't yet won his superbowls. Shanny's predigree is very different than that of Coughlin's at the time.

Yeah but Coughlin was still a well established veteran coach even before the SB wins which only solidified his status.
My question is does Shanahan walk away from $7.5M and the challenge of getting this team on track? I have a feeling Snyder will be reluctant to fire him, so ultimately it will come down to what Shanahan wants to do. Come back and be a "lame duck" and earn an extension or walk away?
