As for the news:
BP says it will pay for Gulf spill's cleanup - Yahoo! News (http://news.yahoo.com/s//ap/us_gulf_oil_spill)

I think this is a good recap of everything going on to try to stop the gusher and why it's so hard. It sounds like, at least for now, everyone is on the same page to try and end the leak and minimize the damage. It says that if this next approach (which will take 7-10 days) doesn't work, it could be up to 90 days to get the relief well drilled.
no words can explain how awful that will be. Everyone needs to be focused on getting this shell pump or whatever up and working.

Sure BP will "pay the bill" for the cleanup, but that bill is going to be passed on to the consumer in many different ways.

While that is probably true if wall street does not freak out and bid up the price of oil it will be harder for BP to increase its prices to pay for this.

For you guys that like seafood, keep in mind that Gulf stream seafood is probably going to cost a pretty penny now.

I can already see the U.S seafood industry and the wildlife going down the toilet. Pretty awful.

If this works its way around the Florida Keys and up the east coast like some say it might, it will have a seriously damaging effect on vacations/tourism to beaches as summer approaches. Memorial Day weekend and July 4th weekend could be seriously affected

I was in Clearwater Beach a few weeks ago, man if those beaches end up ruined I'm going to be seriously bummed. Such a nice area.

Getting worse, I don't think we can stop this. It appears the leak is increasing in severity by the day. The spill tripled in size in 2 days. There are 10's of millions of barrells of oil in the deposit they were tapping. This is some history making stuff. 2,000 years from now this will be America's lasting legacy. The modern day Tower of Babel. The consequences of man trying to play god. It's time we reevaluate everything. God don't like ugly I blame Arizona forn this curse.

Do you also blame Arizona for the floods in Ten. and the attempted bombing in NY? I guess Tiger Woods not making the cut this weekend was also racest and to be blamed on Arizona.

I live five minutes from the beach, and at this time of year I'm there almost every weekend. Won't be the same if I can't go

I can't even imagine how much damage it will cause if it takes that long to get it capped. Unbelievable.

One would think they'd have emergency capping system at the bottom of the sea. I guess simply sticking in a drill is cheaper.

You know they did, and the emergency system failed. I imagine the new regulations will call for a redundant fail safe. And that would be a good thing, especially when you are nearly a mile under water.

Side note: the USAF A-10 warthog was an ugly looking, but very effective tank killer. The reason it was so effective is because it was super redundant, it could lose half the airplane systems, and one of its two engines and still complete the mission. Clearly expensive, but worth it. Same would be true with any emergency system that is the only stop to a disaster of this magnitude.
